Further, under OMB Circular A the NPS is designated the lead federal agency for the cultural resource data theme throughout the federal government, tasked with providing standards, guidelines and methods of sharing information. In this capacity, CRGIS serves as the Cultural Resource Theme Lead for the Federal Geographic Data committee and collaborates with other federal, state and Tribal agencies to develop tools and standards to facilitate this data sharing, developing cultural resource spatial data transfer standards.

The Cultural Resources Stewardship, Partnerships, and Science Directorate provides leadership for the protection and interpretation of the nation's heritage, guides a national historic preservation program that embraces national parks and heritage resources, engages all American peoples with the places and stories that make up their national identity, and serves as a model for the stewardship of cultural resources throughout the world.
